Reni was trained by Denys Calvaert, and then probably in the Carracci workshop. He spent 1602-13 in Rome, where Domenichino had also arrived. Reni is reputed to have met (and quarrelled with) Caravaggio there.Many of his best known works were painted in Rome, including the ceiling fresco, 'Aurora' (Casino Rospigliosi), carried out before 1614 for Cardinale Scipione Borghese.
Das druckgrafische Werk. Während seiner ganzen Laufbahn ist Reni auch als Druckgrafiker tätig und schafft rund 40 eigenhändige Radierungen – allesamt keine Reproduktionsgrafiken nach seinen Gemälden, sondern autonome Bilderfindungen. Von einem Großteil davon besitzt das Städel Museum Abzüge, die hier erstmals präsentiert werden.

Guido Reni: A Complete Catalogue of his Works with an Introductory Text. New York, 1984, pp. 31, 256–57, 261, no. 114, pl. 139, states mistakenly that it is said to have come from the Toledo cathedral; dates the Castelfranco Emilia Assumption slightly earlier (1626–27) and the Forlì Immaculate Conception slightly later (1628–29).

In einer groß angelegten Ausstellung entdeckt das Städel Museum ab dem 23. November 2022 den einstigen Malerstar des italienischen Barock wieder: Guido Reni (1575–1642).
Guido Reni (4. listopadu 1575, Calvenzano – 18. srpna 1642, Bologna) byl italský barokní malíř. Studoval u Denise Calvaerta , Lodovica a Annibala Carracciů , později odjel do Říma, kde se seznámil s dílem Caravaggiovým .
