8. März 2018 · Overview. Ida B. Wells-Barnett. She was born on July 16, 1862, in Holly Springs, Mississippi before the close of the Civil War. She was orphaned in 1878 at age 16 when her parents died, victims of the yellow fever epidemic. She received her education and early training at Shaw University (now Rust College).
