Ragtime was a modification of the popular march style with a syncopated rhythm that gave voice to the Black American experience at the turn of the 20th-century.

The song, inspired by the music of South Carolina dockworkers, was picked up by every bandleader across the United States, including Paul Whiteman, whose orchestra was the most popular of the Jazz Age.
