Downing College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge and currently has around 950 students. Founded in 1800, it was the only college to be added to Cambridge University between 1596 and 1869, and is often described as the oldest of the new colleges and the newest of the old.

1895: Downing sells two acres of land on the north boundary with Downing Street to the University for £15,000, the beginnings of the Downing Site. Development of Lensfield Road boundary, with building of large red-brick houses let by the College on 99-year leases.
