It won Hirschfelder a BAFTA Award for Best Original Film Score. He worked on a mix of feature films, documentaries, TV movies, and shorts before landing the biopic Shine (1996). Starring Geoffrey Rush as pianist David Helfgott, it featured Hirschfelder's piano performances on the soundtrack and earned him his first Oscar nomination and a second BAFTA nomination.
