Maria Rita Stumpfnasceu na serra gaúcha e começou a compor aos 14 anos de idade e a cantar ainda adolescente em festivais e em seus proprios shows. Em 1985, transferiu-se para o Rio de Janeiro onde seguiu sua carreira, lançando em 1988 o incensado LP Brasileira com Luiz Eça, Grupo Uaktí e Ricardo Bordini. Em 1993, lançou o CD Mapa das Nuvens.
