Cleopatra followed Caesar back to Rome, but after his assassination in 44 BC, she returned to Egypt. Ptolemy XIV died mysteriously at around this time, and Cleopatra made her son Caesarion co-regent.

The oldest child of King Ptolemy XII Auletes, Cleopatra was the last queen of the Macedonian dynasty that ruled Egypt between 323 and 30 bc. They were lovers until the Ides of March in 44 BC, when Caesar was tragically murdered. As the “New Isis”, she insisted on the finest luxury. In contrast, Cleopatra’s sister, Arsenoe, was paraded through the streets as a conquered slave when she arrived in Rome in chains.
