12. Feb. 2008 · Eddie South was one of the earliest jazz violinists—he recorded in 1923 (Joe Venuti, often thought of as the earliest, didn't record until 1924) and one of the first African/American jazz musicians to play extensively in Europe.
He was coached in jazz by violinist, clarinetist, and saxophonist Darnell Howard. Eddie South had the mastery of a classical playing style in combination with superb jazz skills. He integrated the gypsy sound to which he was exposed in Eastern Europe. The end result? A true “crossover” genius. It all comes together in Eddie South’s music.
