I also have a set of three vinyl LP's of Handel's Messiah with the Royal Philharmonic orch. conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent and Royal Choral Soc.(Reader's Digest) and this persuaded me to get a CD version. She was also a great fan of Sir Malcolm Sargent from her Proms days. The work also has another family connection in that my grandmother was often asked by local choirs to sing the soprano solos, especially "I know that my Redeemer Liveth" which she was especially fond of. Handel's Messiah of course has been a part of British life for many years ...
Malcolm Sargent’s reputation as one of the great popularisers of classical music in Britain arose not only through his long association with the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (1947–67), but was in evidence much earlier through chief conductorships of the Hallé (1939–42), Liverpool Philharmonic (1942–8) and BBC Symphony Orchestras (1950–57).

Harry Christophers has conducted three recordings of Messiah, the pick of which is The Sixteen’s lovingly detailed 2007 recording. All four soloists are former members of the choir, and the choruses are sung sublimely. Orchestral playing is judiciously tasteful, albeit without much presence at the bottom end.
