The song Jive at Five was written by Count Basie, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Tab Smith and was first recorded and released by Count Basie and His Orchestra in 1939. In 1935, Moten died from a failed tonsillectomy. The band tried to remain together, but failed. Basie then went on to form “Barons of Rhythm” with five other Moten Band members.
