  4. Introduction ↑. Sir John French, 1 st Earl of Ypres (1852-1925), commanded the British Expeditionary Force from 30 July 1914 to 18 December 1915. French was a hard-riding cavalryman, whose exploits during the South African War – when troops under his command relieved Kimberley – had made him one of the most famous soldiers in the Empire.

  6. He was the son of John French and Olivia John. John married Maureen Helena Kelly, daughter of Henry John Piers Kelly, in 1943. Their marriage was registered in Kensington in the second quarter of 1943. He and Maureen Helena Kelly were divorced in 1972. John succeeded as the third Earl of Ypres upon the death of his father on 5 April 1958.
