Despite this impressive martial heritage, success in the military seemed unlikely for Allen as he failed out of West Point—twice—ultimately gaining his commission through Catholic University’s R.O.T.C. program.
Two years later Major General Terry de la Mesa Allen, Sr., died of natural causes on 12-09-1969, in El Paso, Texas, at the old age of 81. He was buried, alongside his son, Lieutenant Colonel Terry De La Mesa Allen, Jr and wife Mary Frances, born Robinson, Allen, who died age 78 in 1978, in the Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.

Allen’s son, a lieutenant-colonel, was killed in action in 1967 during the Vietnam War.
Major General Terry de la Mesa Allen Sr. was a senior United States Army officer who fought in both World War I and World War II. Allen was a decorated World War I veteran who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in North Africa and Sicily from May 1942 until August 1943. He was later selected to lead the 104th Infantry Division as divisional commander, a post he held until the end of the war.
