Er war der Sohn des aus Brünn stammenden jüdischen Musikkritikers Julius Korngold, der für die Neue Freie Presse schrieb. Sein erster Lehrer war Robert Fuchs; später wurde er Schüler von Alexander von Zemlinsky und Hermann Grädener.
