He attended law school in Flushing, New York, passed the bar in 1851, and thereafter began practicing law. Bayard was appointed U.S. District Attorney for Delaware in 1853, but resumed private practice in 1854.

When Cleveland failed in his reelection bid, Bayard returned to Wilmington in 1889 and resumed his legal practice. Cleveland named him ambassador to Great Britain upon his return to the White House in 1893.
