Louella Parsons was born Louella Oettinger in Freeport, Illinois, most probably on August 6, 1881. The birth date needs to be qualified, as Parsons would later steadfastly claim she was born in 1893. In her 1943 book The Gay Illiterate Parsons gives August 6 as the date of her birth but glaringly neglects to reveal the year.

Louella Parsons ran a line her column celebrating Hedda Hopper’s new gig. Parsons, secure in her role as queen of the Hollywood roost, and seemingly unaware of Hopper’s antagonistic intentions, didn’t see the former actress as a threat.
Parsons had joined the paper that same year to begin her column “Flickerings in Filmland.”. In 1928, Louella and her daughter Harriet established the Hollywood Women’s Press Club, an informal forum for female reporters and fan magazine writers to exchange ideas and gossip over lunch at the Brown Derby (Barbas 2005, 124–5).
