The county was created on January 20, 1863. It is named after Isaac Stevens, the first governor of Washington Territory. Geography. The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 2,541 square miles (6,580 km 2). Of that 2,478 square miles (6,420 km 2) is land and 63 square miles (160 km 2) (2.5%) is water.
