Vor allem der Spruch: „Ut unum sint“ (damit sie eins seien; Joh. 17,22) habe ihn berührt. Nach diesem Berufungserlebnis begann er ein Studium der Philosophie und Theologie (vorher hatte er ein Studium der Jurisprudenz begonnen) und trat in die Gesellschaft Jesu ein.
