The Contours are widely remembered for their 1962 smash "Do You Love Me?," one of the early hits that helped put Motown on the map. Yet they aren't always associated with their contribution to the label; they were one of the roughest, hardest R&B groups Berry Gordy ever signed, and their sound simply didn't resemble the smooth, sophisticated blueprint that later became Motown's trademark.
The Contours. Soundtrack: Dirty Dancing. "You broke my heart, 'cause I couldn't dance . . . " begins the 1962 song that, probably more than any other, brought the "Motown sound" to white American teenagers in the early 1960s.
They managed hits with "Shake Sherry" and the Smokey Robinson tune "First I Look at the Purse," but numerous lineup changes (future Temptations singer Dennis Edwards was a member for a while) and a sound that moved against the grain at Motown soon idled them on the back burner.
