A player of bit parts with a German theatrical troupe from 1921, Lorre achieved international fame as the psychotic child murderer in the German.
Am 4.3.1933 verläßt der Jude Lorre Deutschland, geht zunächst nach Wien, dann nach Paris ("Du haut en bas") und 1934 für den Hitchcock-Film "The Man Who Knew Too Much" nach England. Während der Dreharbeiten heiratet er die Schauspielerin Cäcilie Lvovsky (später: Celia Lovsky).
