Dent was born on December 17, 1820, in White Haven, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was the son of Frederick Fayette Dent (1787–1873) and Ellen Bray ( née Wrenshall) Dent (1793–1857). [1] He graduated from West Point in 1843. One of Dent's classmates was Ulysses S. Grant, who married Dent's sister Julia.
In a letter to Dent the following year, Frederick Dent Grant included a $500 check and stated that his father had been "very fond of you." Grant was the first son of General of the Army and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Dent Grant. He was named after his uncle, Frederick Tracy Dent.
