The Fawn—an exploratory and transitional release for The Sea and Cake, with its bleeping synthesizers and mechanical percussion.Eric Claridge's intuitive bass-work grounds the LP enormously, while John McEntire's production and mixing betrays the subtle, looping aesthetics that would become his signature (he produced Stereolab's Dots and Loops this same year).
Starting with 1997's The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire almost exclusively plays drums in The Sea and Cake.

25. März 1997 · This album is a bit different from a lot of their discography, it's like a hybrid between their early sound and "One Bedroom". It seems like a transitional period for the band, Sam's singing style seems to have changed a bit after this album and there's synths/keys and drum machines that weren't really a part of their sound up until this point.
