"We Are Family" is a song recorded by American vocal group Sister Sledge. Composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers , they both offered the song to Atlantic Records ; although the record label initially declined, the track was released in April 1979 as a single from the album of the same name (1979) [1] and began to gain club and radio play, eventually becoming the group's signature song .
We Are Family is one of two albums produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers in 1979, the other being Chic's third album Risqué including hit singles "Good Times" and "My Forbidden Lover". Edwards and Rodgers would only show the songs to Sister Sledge once the sisters were in front of the studio microphones. [4]

Some of Bernard’s work outside of Chic includes Diana Ross’ hit songs “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down”, Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” and “He’s the Greatest Dancer”. Edwards also produced and played on songs for Robert Palmer, Rod Stewart, Debbie Harry (of Blondie), Joe Cocker, and Jody Watley to name a few.
