In 1593, the English Jesuit College of St Omers – Stonyhurst’s direct lineal predecessor – was founded by the English Jesuit priest, Fr Robert Persons SJ. The school’s purpose was to provide a safe place of education to the sons of English recusant Catholic families, at a time when such schooling was illegal in the boys’ home country.
