Wegen seiner grundlegenden Untersuchungen zur Atomtheorie gilt er als einer der Wegbereiter der Chemie. Ihm zu Ehren ist im anglo-amerikanischen Raum die Einheit der Atommasse (amu) mit Dalton benannt worden.
