8. Feb. 1970 · LOS ANGELES, Feb. 7 (AP) —Roscoe Karns, the stage, movie and television actor, died at St. Vincent's Hospital yesterday. He was 77 years old, and had been hospitalized for over a month.
Karns' last TV assignment was the role of the crusty Admiral Walter Shafer on the Jackie Cooper sitcom Hennessey (1959-62). Roscoe Karns was the father of actor/recording executive Todd Karns, who starred in TV's first filmed comedy series, Jackson and Jill (1949).
Each episode begins with Roscoe Karns, as the title character, walking down a long hallway towards the camera, as the announcer says “Rocky King, chief of homicide of the Metropolitan Police Force in an exciting fight against crime.” During the first three seasons Earl Hammond portrayed King's partner, Detective Sgt. Lane.
