The program was designed to deliver email over the still relatively small ARPANET network, and supports a variety of mail transfer protocols, including SMTP, ESMTP, and DECnet's Mail-11.
Eric Allman authored sendmail and syslog in 1981 while at the University of California at Berkeley. Sendmail was the first electronic mail transfer agent for the Internet and remains popular to this day. He is currently working at the Ubiquitous Swarm Lab
