Geordie è stata scritta da Fabrizio de André nel 1966 come adattamento dell'omonima canzone incisa da Joan Baez nel 1962, a sua volta presa da una ballata britannica del XVI Secolo. Fabrizio conobbe la canzone grazie a Maureen Rix, insegnante d'inglese nell'istituto del quale il padre era dirigente e voce femminile della canzone. A tal proposito, Maureen ricorda:
