Serge Chaloff Discography A central figure in the development of baritone saxophone in jazz, Serge Chaloff is a name that carries significant weight in the genre’s history. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 24, 1923, Chaloff was deeply immersed in the world of music from an early age, thanks to his mother, a renowned pianist and music educator.
Serge Chaloff was the premier baritone saxophonist of the bop era, his fiery, dynamic improvisations restoring the instrument to prominence some months prior to the arrival of Gerry Mulligan.
Chaloff was voted best baritone saxophonist by the readers of Down Beat magazine three times, and by the readers of Metronome magazine five times. Chaloff returned to Boston in 1950 and eventually kicked his habit. He played with the Herb Pomeroy big band in 1956, and recorded a pair of small-group gems for Capitol, Boston Blow-Up and Blue Serge.
