Born in Ireland, he was an early supporter of William and Mary, siding with them in the Glorious Revolution.
His long-suffering wife, to whom he paid tribute in his will, remarried successively Captain (later Rear-Admiral) William Caldwell, Samuel Pytts* and Alderman William Bridgen.
