Karl Gunnar Myrdal (/ ˈ m ɜːr d ɑː l, ˈ m ɪər-/ MUR-dahl, MEER-; Swedish: [ˈɡɵ̌nːar ˈmy̌ːɖɑːl]; 6 December 1898 – 17 May 1987) was a Swedish economist and sociologist.
Gunnar Myrdal conducted his first works within economic theory, but later developed broader social analyses. In An American Dilemma (1944), he analyzed the African American population's situation in the US by examining political, institutional, demographic, and education and health factors.
Professor Myrdal is recipient of more than thirty honorary degrees beginning with Harvard University in 1938, where he gave the Godkin Lectures that year. He has received many prizes, the last one being the Malinowski Award by the Society of Applied Anthropology.
The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1974 was awarded jointly to Gunnar Myrdal and Friedrich August von Hayek "for their pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena"
