Rod's son, also named Frederick, served in Vietnam, and his son, Lt. Russell Burnham, became a Physician Assistant in the US Army, and was named the 2003 US Army Soldier of the Year, and the 2007 US Army Medical Corps NCO of the Year. Russell was also an Eagle Scout.
