Born on September 9, 1850, in Cottingham, near Hull, she was the third daughter of Charles Harrison and Elizabeth Hawksley Nelson Harrison. Her father was a Hull timber merchant and her mother a member of the gentry, the daughter of Thomas Nelson of Timber Grange, Lincolnshire.¹ A month after Jane’s birth, however, her mother died.
