  1. 23. Aug. 2023 · Interesting facts about Roscommon Castle: Roscommon Castle was built by Robert de Ufford in the 13 th century. It was strategically placed on a hill in order to overlook the town of Roscommon. The castle was a stronghold for the O’Connor dynasty, the High Kings of the province of Connacht. It was burned in 1690 by supporters of Oliver Cromwell.

  2. Roscommon Castle, a 13th-century Norman structure, was built in 1269 by Robert de Ufford, Justiciar of Ireland, on lands which were taken from an Augustinian priory. The castle was laid siege by the Connacht King Aodh O'Connor in 1272. Eight years on, it was once more in the possession of the English garrison and fully restored.
