The ANC is the ruling party in the national legislature, as well as in eight of the nine provinces ( Western Cape is governed by the Democratic Alliance ). The ANC received 57.50% of the vote during the 2019 general election.
Democratic Party. The Democratic Party ( DP) was the name of the South African political party now called the Democratic Alliance. Although the Democratic Party name dates from 1989, the party existed under other labels throughout the apartheid years, when it was the Parliamentary opposition to the ruling National Party 's policies.
These elections were seen as a test of the ANC, after some discontent with the speed of the delivery of new services at the municipal level in South Africa. The official opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA) took 14.8% of votes nationwide, placing them in second overall.
