Coe is one of the finest middle distance runners the world has ever seen; the only man to have won 1500m Olympic gold twice. Intense rivalry. Seb Coe reached his peak at the same time as two other world class British middle-distance runners: Steve Cram and Steve Ovett. His career was defined by a series of epic duels with this pair.
Seb set 12 world records during his athletics career. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m, a feat which he repeated in Los Angeles in 1984. He retired from competitive athletics in 1990 and became a Member of Parliament and Private Secretary to William Hague. In 2002 he was made a Peer.

On 15 August 1979, Sebastian Coe set a world record over 1500m at Zurich’s fabled Weltklasse meeting. It was hardly unexpected. The British athlete had set world records for 800m and the mile at separate meetings in Oslo a month earlier and it was known he was looking for a fast run in Zurich.
