So you're left to swap out letters and see if one gives you the win - which is exactly what I did, but it only worked because I had no other errors. If there was another VIEIRA/EVIE equivalent in the grid, I might have needed to cheat. And at any rate, the fact that I need to leave that cross til last so that I can just brute force my way through the alphabet means that it's not a great cross.

Vor einem Tag · I was reflecting on Enlightenment and I think it would actually have worked better for me if it was set in some vague present day (I didn’t clock the 90s setting in After Me Comes The Flood and that timelessness works much better there IMO, though I had other problems with the novel). For me, saying ‘1997’ sets up expectations of a precise historical period that I then want to be fulfilled!
