Josef Dietrich (born May 28, 1892, Hawangen, Germany—died April 21, 1966, Ludwigsburg, West Germany) was a German SS officer who commanded Adolf Hitler ’s bodyguard and later led an SS panzer (armoured) army in World War II. A butcher’s apprentice, Dietrich joined the German army in 1911 and rose to the rank of sergeant during World War I.
