McPhee gründete mit John Cruickshank (Gesang), Pete Cruickshank (Bass) und Dave Boorman (Schlagzeug) die Band The Dollarbills. Mit dem zusätzlichen Mitglied Bob Hall (Piano) nannten sie sich schließlich Groundhogs, nach dem Ground Hog Blues von John Lee Hooker .
