Of this the only remains are six bays of stone cellars, in two adjoining ranges, of quadripartite vaulting with ovolomoulded ribs carried on circular stone pillars that have moulded capitals.

Two younger brothers of the Ponsonbys of Hale, Sir John and Henry, went into Ireland about the middle of the seventeenth century. Sir John was ancestor of the noble families of Besborough and Ponsonby; Henry of the Ponsonbys of Crotto.

Vor 2 Tagen · The Earl of Wilton, brother of the late marquis, and uncle of the Duke of Westminster, was born here, and baptised, as we have said, in the adjoining church of St. John the Evangelist. It was whilst living here, in 1735, that Charles, third Earl of Peterborough, married, as his second wife, Mrs. Anastasia Robinson, the celebrated singer.
