Vor 6 Tagen · Late in the summer of 1862, all the principal Confederate armies undertook offensive operations. While the army of Gen. Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland, resulting in the Antietam Campaign, the commands of Maj. Gens. E. Kirby Smith and Braxton Bragg launched a 2-prong thrust into Kentucky.
24. Juni 2024 · The Second battalion, under Major Battle, was ordered to Virginia, and early in April reported to Lieut.-Col. E. Kirby Smith, commanding at Lynchburg. Being joined a few days later by the other battalion, under Lomax, the regiment was mustered into the Confederate service, by Colonel Smith, about April 12, 1861.
7. Juni 2024 · Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne led a small division in the van of Brig. Gen. E. Kirby Smith's advance into Kentucky at the outset of the Kentucky Campaign of 1862. Col. John Scott's Confederate cavalry rode ahead of Cleburne's infantry, scouting for the Union army.

18. Juni 2024 · In March of 1862, he went to Knoxville, Tennessee, to assume command of the Department of East Tennessee and participate in Kirby Smith's Invasion of Kentucky. He was promoted to lieutenant general on October 9, 1862, as a result of his success in the Kentucky invasion.
