i have a ball with a certain mass on the moon. i have a magic spring that will impart the exact amout of force into the ball that will bring it to escape velocity. as it a magic spring, there are no confounding factors. so pop, up goes the ball and runs out of momentum exactly on the edge of the moons gravitational field (or within c% as i dont think gravity has an edge like this)
