The original title of the photograph is “Loyalist militiaman at the moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936”. The story behind this photo is too much complicated and disputed.
Federico Borrell García (* 3. Januar 1912 in Benilloba; † 5. September 1936 am Cerro de la Coja bei Cerro Muriano) war ein spanischer Anarchist und republikanischer Soldat während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs .
The soldier in the photograph was later claimed to be the anarchist militiaman Federico Borrell García . The photo appears to capture a Republican soldier at the very moment of his death. The soldier is shown collapsing backward after being fatally shot in the head, with his rifle slipping out of his right hand.
