The split occurred along linguistic lines, forming the French-speaking ULB in 1969, and Dutch -speaking Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 1970.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel was formed in 1970 by the splitting of the Free University of Brussels, which was founded in 1834 by the lawyer and liberal politician Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. The founder aimed to establish a university independent from state and church, where academic freedom would be prevalent. [9]
After the revolution of 1830, young Belgium established a progressive constitution. It enshrined the principle of freedom of education: virtually unheard of at the time. The bishops immediately seized upon this principle to establish a Catholic University in Mechelen as early as 1834.
