I find that younger, more popular authors often only recommend books as a way of seeking engagement or as some sort of quid pro quo. An example of a good author blog is Mark Lawrence, who has his Self-published Fantasy Blog off , a contest for promoting self-published SF&F books which started pretty organically and has since exploded in popularity and importance.
