He was a patrilineal descendant of Lord Burghley and the 1st Earl of Salisbury, chief ministers of Elizabeth I. The family owned vast rural estates in Hertfordshire and Dorset.

  7. Vor 4 Tagen · William Cecil made several settlements of the manor, and died seised of it in 1598. (fn. 84) It then passed to his second son Robert, (fn. 85) Principal Secretary of State from 1596–1612. He was created Baron Cecil of Essendine in 1603 and Earl of Salisbury in 1605.
