When Yuan Shikai declared himself Emperor, the reaction was him being denounced nationwide and armies marching on Beijing. More importantly, his old Beiyang Army generals also denounced him. Did Yuan attempt to gauge their reaction before his attempt to become emperor, or did something cause the former Beiyang to change their minds?
