1990–1995: Solo beginnings, Whatever and I'm with Stupid Jon Brion (pictured) co-produced Mann's first three albums. Mann recorded her first solo albums with the producer Jon Brion, who had been a member of the 'Til Tuesday touring band. Mann found working with Brion exciting and felt her songwriting improved with him.
