For 20 years (1894–1914), Mrs. Patrick Campbell flourished as one of the great ladies of the English stage, appearing in no less than 43 roles, though not always to critical acclaim. In 1895, for example, she had a triumph in Pinero's The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith, appeared as Juliet to mixed reviews, and then failed in Sudermann's Magda.
British actress. Beatrice Tanner was born in London, daughter of John Tanner and his Italian wife. In 1894 she eloped with Patrick Campbell, who died fighting in the Boer War in 1900 (their son also died in action, during World War I). She married her second husband, George Cornwallis West, in 1914.
