About. The Poni-Tails were a trio of singers from Brush High School in Cleveland, Ohio, originally formed in 1955. The group consisted first of Karin Topinka, Pat McCabe, and Toni Cistone; LaVerne Novak replaced Topinka in 1957 (reportedly when the latter’s parents objected to her pursuing a musical career).
Parental pressure forced Karen Topinka to leave the group ; her replacement was Patti McCabe. Illius managed to get the girls signed to ABC-Paramount. "Just My Luck To Be Fifteen" vanished from sight upon release, but the next single (1958), with a similar theme, would secure the Poni-Tails a place in pop history.
