He grew up in Yonkers, New York. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Princeton, and then, in 1931, headed to California Institute of Technology to pursue his Ph.D.
In his research, Bright became a major architect of chemical physics. He provided definitive theoretical treatments of many aspects of molecular vibrational and rotational dynamics, especially symmetry analysis, and developed with his students key experimental methods in infrared and microwave spectroscopy.
